TIMELINE
- Phase II of the Four Corners Public Arts program will take place in the Fall of 2020 and Spring of 2021.
- RFP Deadline: Sunday, September 13th, 2020
- Applicants will be contacted the last week of September.
LOCATIONS OF FOCUS
- The effort is concentrated in the Four Corners Historic District in the Central Ward of Newark, New Jersey. Focal points include Treat Place and Beaver Street, and the surrounding areas. If a proposal is accepted, a location will be assigned where a site specific application can take place.
ACCEPTABLE MEDIUMS
- Phase II acceptable mediums include wall murals, relief sculpture, temporary activations and digital artwork applications.
LANDMARKS AND HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
- This project is driven by the regulations and specifications guided by the Landmarks and Historic Preservation Commission. The RFP was designed to respond to this; asking artists to propose mural concepts around the histories of these activation sites. The partnership is looking for proposals with intention- interpreting, and creating awareness of Newark’s historic past, giving voice to/elevating local communities, and sharing the vibrancy of the City’s contemporary character.

ENGAGEMENT REQUIREMENT
- Proposals must include a partnership or program that involves the community in the conception and/or implementation of the artwork. An applicant must propose potential collaborators and their role in the project.
ARTISTS
- Applicants are selected by a jury that includes the partnership, project manager, selected arts professionals and community members.
- The RFP is open to local, national and international artists. Collaborations or collectives are welcomed. Experience is preferred; however, the jury will consider artists that are new to working in the public.
- Phase I artists are welcome to apply, but are encouraged to present a strong collaborative proposal.
SUBMISSION PLATFORM
- RFPs are collected through an online submission platform called Submittable. Link: newarkarts.submittable.com/
- The RFP asks for applicant information, a project proposal, strategy for engagement and impact statement.
- For those proposing permanent works (wall murals and sculpture), upon acceptance, a rigorous rendering and approval process will commence.
SITE PREPARATION
- A number of efforts will be conducted to prepare the streetscape for artists. Facades will be power washed, natural growth and debris will be removed, and activated surfaces will repaired.
PAYMENT
- Artists are paid an honorarium for their work. Honorariums range from $1,000 - $15,000 and are contingent upon scope of work, and level of engagement.
- For artists that may have to travel or need accommodations, these will be assessed on a per case basis alongside each proposal.
