Using the figure of an adult single Black woman, the sketches are visually set accordingly to the period when the second Wave of Migration took place, showing different elements as symbolism, starting with woman holding suitcases with the official colors from the state of New Jersey.

The suitcases are full of stamps from different states and the train ticket implies that she’s been traveling from South to North using the train, which was the main conveyance at the time. Blue violets on her skirt symbolizing the state flower of New Jersey and matching the style of the epoch. All of these elements aggregate a feeling of the individual, yet collective quest to freedom towards Northern States.
