THE FOUR CORNERS PUBLIC ARTS PHASE II
Phase II of the Four Corners Public Arts program will take place in the Fall of 2020 and Spring of 2021. The second phase will focus on community building through public art, and call for artists whose practice mandates social engagement. The submission process includes both a public works proposal, and a strategy for engagement, which could include a local partnership with an organization, opportunity for youth involvement, workshop, performance, and/or more. In addition to the public artworks and accompanying programs, new streetscape improvements will be a crucial part of this phase to emphasize these spaces as places for everyone to convene and enjoy.
REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS:
Public Works Proposal
This request for proposals asks artists to share conceptual approaches to public artworks in the district of focus. Artists are called on to propose narratives that are rooted in research, while also providing an expanded lens of interactive learning around these activation sites. Applicants are encouraged to be intentional and responsive with their proposals; interpreting, and creating awareness of Newark’s historic past, giving voice to/elevating local communities, and sharing the vibrancy of the City’s contemporary character.
Phase II acceptable mediums include wall murals, relief sculpture, temporary activations and digital artwork applications. Proposals will be accepted via Submittable, with a deadline of Sunday, September 13, 2020. Artists honorariums range from $1,000 - $15,000 and are contingent upon scope of work, and level of engagement.Strategy for Engagement
Proposals must include a partnership or program that involves the community in the conception and/or implementation of the artwork. Forms of engagement may vary, and could include a local partnership with an organization, opportunity for youth involvement, workshop, performance, and more.Location
The effort is concentrated in the Four Corners Historic District in the Central Ward of Newark, New Jersey. Focal points include Treat Place and Beaver Street, and the surrounding areas. If a proposal is accepted, a location will be assigned where a site specific application can take place.
COMMUNITY Q + A:
The Partnership and Central Ward Councilwoman McIver will host a virtual community Q + A on Tuesday, August 25th at 5pm. This event is open to artists, residents and local organizations that are interested in the project. RSVP here.
