Sewing a Path to Freedom (2019)
BARAT FOUNDATION with SUE DALY
The Underground Railroad was the first civil rights movement in the country. The most famous conductor on the Underground Railroad was Harriet Tubman, an escaped slave responsible for helping over 300 slaves escape to freedom in the North. Ms. Tubman came through Newark and was harbored in the underground passageways at the First Presbyterian Church on Broad Street. The A.M.E. Zion church was also noted for its Underground Railroad activity. Black Abolitionists of the Newark church included Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, and Frederick Douglass. Sewing a Path to Freedom shares a series of quilt patterns that were packed with codes to assist in one’s journey to freedom.
